How dimensional weight works
A light, bulky box takes up space a carrier could have sold to denser freight, so carriers bill for volume as well as mass. They convert your package's cubic size into a weight using a DIM divisor, then charge whichever is greater: your actual scale weight, or that dimensional weight. The bigger and emptier your packaging, the more likely dimensional weight governs — which is exactly why right-sizing cartons and cutting void space lowers freight cost.
How to lower your billable weight
- Right-size the carton. Every inch of empty headspace is volume you pay for. Match the box to the product.
- Cut void fill. Less air means a smaller box, not just less dunnage.
- Design for cube. Products and cases that nest and stack tight ship denser.
- Check the divisor. Different services use different divisors; the right service can change the math.

What is a DIM divisor?
A DIM divisor is the number a carrier divides your package's cubic size by to get its dimensional weight. A larger divisor produces a smaller dimensional weight. The exact value is set by the carrier and service level, so use the one in your rate agreement.
Is billable weight the actual or dimensional weight?
It is the greater of the two. Carriers compare your actual scale weight against the dimensional weight and bill whichever is higher, rounded up to the next whole pound or kilogram.
Does dimensional weight apply to LTL freight?
Not directly. Parcel carriers use DIM divisors; less-than-truckload freight is rated by NMFC class, which is based largely on density. Both reward denser, right-sized packaging.
How do I reduce dimensional weight?
Right-size the carton to the product, remove void space, and design for cube so items nest and stack tightly. Smaller, denser packages have lower dimensional weight and often a better freight class too.
