What an auto-bottom carton is

An auto-bottom carton — also called a 1-2-3 bottom, auto-lock, or crash-lock bottom — has its four base panels die-cut and pre-glued at the factory so they interlock automatically when the flat carton is squared up. The packer just opens the carton and the bottom snaps into a locked, load-bearing base; only the top (usually a tuck) is closed by hand. It ships and stores flat like any folding carton.

When to use an auto-bottom carton

  • Heavier or bulkier products. The locked base carries far more weight than tuck-in bottom flaps.
  • Fast hand-fill. No assembling the bottom means much quicker packing — valuable at high throughput.
  • Bottles, jars, and glass. A secure base is worth the small cost premium when a blow-out would break the product.

Called out as width × height × depth like any carton. The blank is taller on the bottom than a simple tuck because the auto-lock panels add height below the body:

Strengths and trade-offs

The auto-bottom trades a little tooling and material cost for a much stronger base and dramatically faster filling. For anything with weight, or any line where packing speed matters, it pays for itself. For light product on a slow line, the extra die and glue aren't justified — a tuck bottom does the job for less.
