There is no single price, and the pages that quote one are guessing — custom box cost is built from a few real drivers, and the biggest reason quotes disagree is the quantity. A custom box’s per-unit cost is the flat blank area times your board price, plus print and finish per box, plus a one-time setup charge spread across the run. Change only the quantity and the per-unit price can move 2–3× while nothing about the box itself changes.
The four cost drivers
- Blank area — the flat sheet the box is cut from. It depends on the style, not just length × width × depth, and it sets how much board each box uses.
- Board price — the grade and finish of the paperboard or corrugated, per unit area.
- Print & finish — inks, coatings, foil, and special processes, per box.
- Setup / tooling — the die, plates, and make-ready. This is a fixed cost, so it amortizes over the run: it dominates a small order and nearly vanishes on a large one.
