This estimates box weight the way a converter would: the RSC blank area (2×(L+W) plus a glue flap, by D+W tall) × a typical combined-board grammage for the flute and grade you pick. Real basis weight varies by mill, liner, and medium, so treat this as an estimate (±10%), not a spec. It deliberately does not use a single L×W×H density divisor — that ignores board grade entirely.

How much does a corrugated box weigh?

A corrugated box’s weight is set by two things: how much board it uses (the flat blank area) and how heavy that board is per square meter (the combined grammage of its two liners and the fluted medium). A calculator that multiplies length × width × height by a single divisor ignores the second half entirely — the same-size box in E-flute and in double-wall BC can differ in weight by more than 2×.

The honest way to estimate it

This tool builds the actual RSC (regular slotted carton) blank: the printed sheet wraps the four walls, so it is 2 × (length + width) long plus a glue flap, and depth + width tall once you count the top and bottom flaps. That blank area, multiplied by a typical combined-board grammage for the flute and grade you choose, gives a weight that tracks reality far better than a density constant. Basis weight still varies by mill, so we treat the answer as an estimate (about ±10%).

Why board grade dominates

Flute profile and edge-crush test (ECT) drive both strength and weight. E-flute is thin and light for retail; C-flute is the workhorse shipper; double-wall BC carries heavy or stacked loads and weighs the most. If you only know your box’s dimensions, pick the grade closest to your application — that single choice moves the weight more than the dimensions do.

How is corrugated box weight actually calculated?

From the flat blank area times the combined-board grammage. For a regular slotted carton the blank is about 2×(length+width) plus a glue flap wide, and depth+width tall. Multiply that area by the grade’s grammage (grams per square meter) and convert to ounces or pounds. This reflects real board; a single length×width×height divisor does not.

Why not just use length × width × height divided by a constant?

Because that ignores board grade. The same 12×9×6 box in thin E-flute versus heavy double-wall BC can differ in weight by more than double. A fixed divisor bakes in one board type and is wrong for every other.

What is combined-board grammage?

The weight per square meter of the finished corrugated board — the two flat liners plus the fluted medium, glued together. It is the honest input for weight. Typical single-wall C-flute is roughly 490 g/m²; double-wall runs higher; E-flute lower. Your converter can give you the exact basis weight for your grade.

How accurate is this estimate?

Within roughly ±10%. Real basis weight varies by mill, liner and medium choice, print and coating, and moisture. Use it to plan freight and dimensional weight, then confirm the exact weight with your converter for a spec sheet.

Does the box weight affect my shipping cost?
