Method. Circumference = π × diameter. A full wrap label is the circumference plus a small seam overlap (enter a negative number for a butt-seam gap instead). Front & back gives two labels of roughly half the circumference, each minus the seam gap. Front only is a comfortable single panel, about a third of the circumference on a round container. Label height is capped at the label-area height minus the top and bottom clearance. These are geometry estimates for planning — bleed, matrix, curvature on small diameters, and applicator tolerances are separate; your printer's spec governs. How to size a label to a container

A label is sized from the container, not from a chart. The width comes from how far the label has to travel around the body — the circumference, which is π (about 3.1416) times the diameter. A full wrap adds a small overlap so the trailing edge lands on the leading edge with no gap; a front-and-back pair splits the circumference in two; a single front panel takes a comfortable slice, usually around a third, so the printed area reads flat to the eye on a round surface.

Height, clearance, and curvature

  • Leave clearance. Keep the label off the shoulder and the base so it applies clean and doesn't wrinkle — a quarter inch top and bottom is a common starting point.
  • Mind small diameters. On tubes, vials, and lip balms, a stiff face stock fights the curve and the edges lift. Use a thin, conformable film and enough overlap. See label flagging on curved containers.
  • Tapered and squeezable containers need extra care — a straight label wrinkles on a cone, and a squeeze tube distorts a full wrap. Size to the straight section and test.

What size label do I need for my bottle?

Measure the bottle's diameter and the straight height where the label sits. The label width for a full wrap is the circumference, which is pi times the diameter, plus a small overlap. The label height is the straight area minus a little clearance top and bottom. Enter those numbers above and the calculator returns the size.

Is there a standard label size?

No. Common sizes exist for popular containers, but there is no universal standard, because labels are sized to the container and the design. Size the label to the object using the circumference math rather than reaching for a fixed dimension.

How do I calculate a full wrap label width?

Multiply the diameter by pi to get the circumference, then add a small overlap, commonly about an eighth of an inch, so the label ends land on each other with no gap. For a butt seam with a gap instead of an overlap, subtract the gap.

How wide should a front-and-back label be?

Roughly half the circumference for each of the two labels, minus a gap on each side so they do not meet at the seams. Split the circumference in two and leave room between them; the calculator does this when you pick the front-and-back style.

Why do my labels lift at the edges on small bottles?

On a tight curve, a stiff face stock stores energy and peels its own edges up, called flagging. Use a thinner, more conformable film, give the wrap enough overlap, and apply to a clean, room-temperature surface. The flagging guide covers material choices in detail.
