What a flexo plate is

A flexo plate is a flexible relief plate — usually photopolymer — mounted to a cylinder or sleeve, one plate per printed color. The image sits slightly raised, like a stamp; ink is metered onto those raised dots by an anilox roll, and the plate transfers it to the moving web of film, paper, or board. Because the plate is a physical tool that has to be imaged, exposed, and washed out before a job can run, it carries a one-time plate and tooling charge — and that tool has a working life. The most important one is the first. Flexo is a "kiss impression" process: the plate should barely touch the substrate. Dial the impression in too heavy — a common shortcut to force ink coverage — and you trade a little density today for a lot of plate life. Why there is no single impression number

Both are true, and neither is useful on its own, because flexo plate life in impressions is a function of the job — not a spec of the plate. A plate printing a coarse spot color on smooth film at a light impression may outlast the artwork it prints. When a reorder needs new plates

This is the question behind the question: do I pay for plates again on reorder? Sometimes yes, often no. Plates are usually a one-time tooling charge, so a straight reorder of the same artwork frequently reuses the plates the printer already made. Two of these surprise buyers most. First, a tiny art change means new plates for the colors that changed. How to protect flexo plate life

Most of plate life is in the pressroom's hands, but a buyer who understands the levers asks better questions and gets more reorders out of a set. The essentials:

  • Insist on kiss impression. The cheapest way to double plate life is to stop over-impressing. If a run needs more density, the fix is usually anilox or ink, not more pressure.
  • Design for the process. Extremely fine highlights and hairline reverses are the first to wear; a preflight pass that respects minimum dot and line sizes buys durability.
