How to fix it
These are the fixes in the order you should try them. The first two solve most cases without changing your material at all.
- Match the adhesive to the surface. Identify the substrate — glass, PET, HDPE, PP, or corrugated — and choose an adhesive rated for it. Low-surface-energy plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene need an aggressive, high-tack adhesive; a general-purpose permanent adhesive will bubble and lift on them. - Clean and dry the surface. Remove dust, oils, mold-release, condensation, and moisture before you apply. Even a thin film of oil or a single fingerprint stops the adhesive from wetting out and forming a bond.
- Apply within the adhesive's temperature range. Bring the container and the label to the adhesive's specified application temperature. Cold surfaces and cold rooms stiffen the adhesive so it never flows into the surface, and it releases later once handling stresses it.
- Add pressure and give it dwell time. Press the whole label down firmly, then leave it undisturbed. Pressure-sensitive adhesives keep building to their ultimate bond over time — commonly cited as roughly 24 hours — so don't judge adhesion at the moment of application.

Flagging on curved and small containers
Flagging deserves its own note because it's a mechanical problem, not a chemical one, and people waste money chasing it with stronger adhesive when the real issue is the face stock. On a tight radius — a lip-balm tube, a dropper vial, a slim beverage can — a stiff film wants to return to flat, and it has enough leverage at the edge to peel itself off even over a good adhesive.
The levers that actually help:
- Thinner, more conformable film. A softer, thinner face stock has far less spring-back on a curve.
- Enough wrap overlap. A wrap label that laps over itself anchors both ends; a butt-cut label with no overlap gives the edge somewhere to lift.
- An aggressive adhesive at a warm surface. Combine the mechanical fix with the chemistry — high tack, applied warm, pressed down.
