Why labels won't stick: an adhesion troubleshooting guide

A label that lifts, curls, or slides off is one of the most common — and most fixable — packaging failures. Nearly every case comes down to three variables you actually control: the adhesive, the surface, and the conditions you applied it under.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Most labels that won't stick are the wrong adhesive for a low-surface-energy plastic — or they're going onto a surface that's dirty, oily, cold, or wet. Adhesion is a match between three things, and when a label fails, one of them is off:

  • Adhesive — is it rated for the material and the temperature you're applying at?
  • Surface — is it clean, dry, and high enough energy for the adhesive to wet out and grip?
  • Conditions — right temperature, enough pressure, and time to reach a full bond?

Labels fail to stick in a few distinct ways, and which one you're looking at narrows the cause fast:

  • It never tacks — the label won't grab at all, or slides the moment it's placed.
  • It tacks, then lets go — holds on the line but pops off within hours or in transit.
  • The edges lift — the middle holds but corners or edges flag up, common on curves and small containers.
  • It fails only sometimes — random units or a single lot, which usually points at contamination or the stock itself.

Surface energy: the concept behind most adhesion failures

A pressure-sensitive label is a sandwich: a printed face stock on top, a layer of adhesive underneath, and a release liner it peels off. When people say "the label won't stick," they almost always mean the adhesive isn't holding — and the reason usually comes down to one property of the surface it's meant to grip: surface energy.

Surface energy decides whether a liquid — including a soft pressure-sensitive adhesive — spreads out and "wets" a surface, or beads up and sits on top. Drip water on clean glass and it spreads; drip it on a freshly waxed car and it beads. Adhesive behaves the same way. High-surface-energy materials — glass, metal, paper, and many coated board stocks — let the adhesive flow into every microscopic pore and grip hard. Low-surface-energy plastics — polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and to a lesser degree PET — resist that wetting, so the adhesive never makes full contact and the label slides or lifts.

That single fact explains most "won't stick" complaints. The same general-purpose label that bonds instantly to a glass jar can slide right off an HDPE bottle. The answer isn't more pressure or a stronger-sounding "permanent" adhesive — it's an adhesive chemistry formulated for low-surface-energy surfaces. How to fix labels that won't stick

Work these in order. The first two solve the large majority of cases; the rest close out the stubborn ones.

  1. Identify the substrate, then match the adhesive to it. Find out what the container is actually made of — glass, PET, HDPE, polypropylene, coated board, or metal. Low-surface-energy plastics (PE, PP) need an adhesive formulated for them; a general-purpose permanent adhesive won't hold.   2. Clean and dry the surface before you apply. Wipe off dust, oils, mold-release agents, and moisture — even fingerprints leave enough oil to break a bond. Isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free wipe, dried fully, is the usual reset. Never apply over condensation.
  3. Apply at the right temperature. Every adhesive has a minimum application temperature. Below it, the adhesive is too stiff to flow into the surface and never fully wets out. Apply in a warm room and let cold product warm up first, unless you're using a cold-temperature adhesive.
  4. Add pressure and dwell. Adhesion needs contact. Press or roll the label down firmly across its whole area — not just the center — so the adhesive makes full contact. On an automated line, check the applicator pressure and the wipe-down.
  5. Give the bond its full cure time before you judge it. Initial tack isn't ultimate adhesion. A pressure-sensitive adhesive keeps building strength for roughly 24 to 72 hours. Don't stress-test, stack, or ship the moment it's applied.
  6. Match the adhesive to the end environment. Freezer, outdoor, wet, oily, and high-heat conditions each need a purpose-built adhesive. A label that holds on a dry shelf can release in an ice bucket or a cold chain. Spec the adhesive for where the product will live, not just where it's labeled.

Is it your fault or your supplier's?

Adhesion failures split fairly cleanly between the specification-and-application side (usually yours) and the manufacturing side (your label supplier's). Being honest about which one you're in saves a lot of finger pointing.

Usually on your side:

  • Choosing a stock adhesive without checking the surface material or the end environment.
  • Applying to a dirty, oily, wet, or cold surface.
  • Not enough pressure, dwell, or cure time before shipping.

Usually on the supplier's side:

  • The wrong adhesive was coated or shipped versus what you specified.
  • A coating defect, out-of-spec coat weight, or old stock with degraded tack.
  • Die-cut or liner problems that stop the label seating properly.

How to tell them apart: apply a fresh label to a clean, warm control surface of the correct material and press it down well. If that holds, the problem is almost certainly your surface prep, your conditions, or the wrong material spec. When to escalate to your label supplier

Escalate to your label supplier when:

  • You've corrected the surface, temperature, pressure, and cure time and it still fails.
  • The failure tracks to a specific roll or lot number.
  • The adhesive lifts cleanly off the face stock or the liner — a coating or lamination issue, not application.
  • You need documentation to spec the next order correctly.

When you do, ask for the adhesive's technical data sheet: its minimum application temperature, service temperature range, recommended and non-recommended substrates, and peel-adhesion values. Why won't my labels stick to plastic?

For refrigerated or frozen products, use an adhesive rated for cold or freezer application and, where possible, label the product before it is chilled.

Is a label that won't stick my fault or the label supplier's?

It can be either. If labels fail across different materials and the surface was dirty, cold, or applied too fast, the cause is usually the specification or the application. If a label that worked on previous runs suddenly fails on a new roll, or the adhesive lifts cleanly off the face or liner, it points to a material or coating issue on the supplier's side.
