Parcel vs freight shipping: parcel, LTL, and FTL compared
The same product can leave your dock three different ways — as a single box in a courier's network, as a couple of pallets sharing a trailer, or in a truck of its own. Picking the right mode is a measurement problem, not a guess, and the answer shapes how your packaging should be built.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Ship on parcel when you are sending a handful of light, right-sized boxes; move to LTL freight once the load is palletized, heavy, or bulky; and step up to a full truckload (FTL) when you have enough pallets to fill — or nearly fill — a trailer. The call comes down to three things you can actually measure: total weight, cube (how much space the shipment occupies), and pallet count. Each mode also wants packaging built a different way.
- Parcel — individual boxes moving through a small-package network; priced on dimensional weight, so box size matters as much as scale weight.
- LTL (less-than-truckload) — a few palletized units sharing a trailer; priced on freight class, which is driven by density.
- FTL (full truckload) — a dedicated trailer for one shipment; makes sense at high pallet counts or when handling and transit time matter.

Parcel, LTL, and FTL: what each mode means
All three modes move a box from A to B on a truck for at least part of the trip. What separates them is how the shipment is handled, how it's priced, and how much of a trailer it uses.
- Parcel (also called small-package or courier) moves your goods as individual, machine-handled boxes through a hub-and-spoke sortation network. Each box is scanned, singulated, and routed on its own. Pricing is per box, on weight and dimensions, with surcharges layered on top.
- LTL freight — less-than-truckload — moves palletized or crated freight that's too big for parcel but doesn't fill a trailer. Your pallets share the truck with other shippers' freight and get handled at cross-dock terminals along the way. Pricing is driven by weight, distance, and freight class.
- FTL freight — full truckload — dedicates an entire trailer to your shipment. It goes straight from your dock to the destination with no terminal handling in between. Pricing is essentially for the truck and the lane, not per pallet.
The practical order is a ladder: as a shipment gets heavier, bulkier, and more palletized, you climb from parcel to LTL to FTL. Which mode to use: weight, cube, and pallet count
There's no single magic number that flips a shipment from parcel to freight — carrier limits, account rates, and product shape all move the line. But three signals do most of the deciding, and you can read all three off a packing list:
- Weight. Very light shipments almost always stay on parcel. As total and per-box weight climb, parcel surcharges and handling fees stack up until a pallet on LTL becomes the simpler, sturdier option.
- Cube. A shipment that's light but bulky is a parcel carrier's least favorite thing — it bills on dimensional weight (more on that below). Bulky, low-density freight often does better palletized on LTL, where density still matters but the penalty curve is different.
- Pallet count. Once goods are on pallets, you're in freight territory. A few pallets point to LTL; a trailer's worth points to FTL. Counting pallets is often the fastest way to pick a mode.
A useful habit: don't decide by rule of thumb, decide by comparison. Price the same real load both ways — as parcel boxes and as palletized freight — and let the numbers choose. The crossover point drifts with your product's density, your carrier agreements, and the lane, so a threshold that's right for one SKU can be wrong for the next.
The three modes compared
Here's the same decision as a side-by-side. Each mode has a zone where it clearly wins and a packaging consequence you should design for up front rather than discover on the loading dock.

Two loads of the identical product can land in different rows here purely because of order size and destination. That's why the mode question is best answered per shipment, not set once and forgotten.
How dimensional weight decides parcel cost
On parcel, the box you choose is a pricing decision. Carriers convert each box's outer dimensions into a dimensional weight — they multiply length by width by height to get cube, then divide by a published dimensional divisor — and bill you on whichever is greater, the actual scale weight or the dimensional weight.
The consequence is that a large, half-empty box can be billed as if it were much heavier than it is. A product that weighs almost nothing but ships in an oversized carton gets charged for the air. Right-sizing the box — or switching a soft, non-fragile item to a mailer — is one of the most reliable ways to lower a parcel bill without touching the product. How freight class and density decide LTL
Move up to LTL and the pricing logic changes. Instead of dimensional weight per box, LTL leans on freight class — a standardized system from the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) that sorts commodities onto a scale running roughly from class 50 to class 500. Lower classes are dense, durable, and easy to handle; higher classes are light, bulky, fragile, or awkward to stack. As a rule of thumb, lower class tends to mean a lower rate.
Density — pounds per cubic foot — is the biggest lever on class for most freight. Pack the same weight into a smaller, denser cube and you generally move toward a lower class. That's why how you build the pallet, not just what's on it, affects the freight bill. A tighter Ti-Hi pattern that raises density can pull a shipment into a friendlier class.

When a full truckload makes sense
FTL is the top of the ladder. It makes sense in a few clear situations:
- Volume. You have enough pallets to fill, or come close to filling, a trailer. Past that point, paying for the whole truck is usually simpler than paying for a lot of LTL space.
- Damage sensitivity. FTL loads aren't cross-docked and re-handled at terminals the way LTL is. Fewer touches means fewer chances for a pallet to be dropped, restacked, or crushed under someone else's freight.
- Time sensitivity. A dedicated trailer runs point-to-point, so it can be faster and more predictable than LTL's terminal-to-terminal routing.
Two limits govern how you load an FTL trailer. You either weight out — hit the legal weight limit before the trailer is full — or cube out, filling the floor and height before hitting the weight cap. Dense freight tends to weight out; light, bulky freight tends to cube out. How packaging changes by mode
The mode you ship on should change how the package is designed. Optimizing for the wrong mode is a quiet, common source of both overspend and damage.
- Parcel: design the single box. Each carton travels alone through automated sortation — down chutes, across belts, dropped into carts. It has to survive individual handling and a drop test, and it should be right-sized so you're not paying dimensional weight on empty space. Protective fill matters here because the box has no neighbors bracing it.
- Freight: design the unit load. On LTL and FTL, the pallet is the shipping unit, not the box. Now stacking strength governs: the bottom cases carry everything above them, sometimes plus another shipper's pallet on top in LTL. Column-stacked cases hold far more than interlocked ones, box compression strength (BCT) has to account for the full stack height, and the pallet pattern needs to be stable enough not to lean or shift in transit. A box engineered to ace a parcel drop test can still fail in a freight stack if its compression strength was never sized for the load above it — and an over-built freight case is wasted material and cube when it goes out one at a time on parcel. Match the packaging to the mode, not the other way around.
Run your own density and class
The recurring theme here is that the right answer depends on your numbers — your product's weight and cube, your carrier's divisor and rates, your lane. Rather than lean on a generic threshold that may not fit your product, measure the load and compare modes directly:
- Weigh and measure the actual box, then check its dimensional weight against your parcel rates.
- Build a pallet, calculate its density, and estimate its freight class.
- Count pallets to see whether you're in LTL or FTL territory, using boxes per pallet to plan the pattern.
- Compare the parcel total to the freight total for the same real shipment, and let the comparison decide.
