Why the per-unit price falls as quantity rises
This is the single most misread part of a quote. When you see a lower per-unit price at a higher quantity, it is not a bulk discount in the retail sense — it is arithmetic. The fixed costs are spread, or amortized, across every unit in the run. Order a small quantity and each unit has to carry a large slice of the tooling and setup. Order more and that same fixed cost divides across more units, so the share carried by each one shrinks and the per-unit price falls.
Two forces stack on top of amortization: buying material in larger lots is usually more efficient per unit, and a line that is already set up and running well wastes proportionally less on start-up and changeover on a longer run. Together they are why the per-unit price keeps easing as the quantity climbs — steeply at first, then more gently as the fixed costs become a smaller part of each unit.
The trap is chasing a lower per-unit number by ordering more than you can sell before the artwork changes or the product is reformulated. - Freight, duties, and taxes — many quotes price the goods at the factory and leave the cost of moving them off entirely, or as a rough estimate. Where the goods change hands changes who pays.
- Artwork and prepress — file cleanup, dieline work, and preflight are sometimes bundled, sometimes billed separately, and sometimes assumed to be your responsibility.
