What "sourcing packaging" actually means

Step one: write a tight spec
A quote is only ever as good as the spec behind it. - Decoration — number of colors, whether they're process or spot, and finishes like matte, gloss, soft-touch, or foil.
- Quantity — the order size, plus the tiers you'd like priced so you can see the price breaks.
- Compliance — any certification or regulatory requirement the packaging has to satisfy.
One early decision shapes the whole spec: custom versus stock. Step two: send an RFQ that gets comparable quotes

Step three: compare quotes apples-to-apples
Quotes come back and the temptation is to sort by the total and stop. Don't. A packaging quote is really two different kinds of cost stacked together, and the total hides which is which. Read the quote in layers.

The one rule that makes comparison valid: compare the same quantity of the same spec, with the same freight basis. If one quote is delivered and another is ex-works, or one includes tooling and another amortizes it into the unit price, you're comparing different questions. Step four: plan a realistic timeline
Price gets the attention; timing sinks launches. The right way to plan is backward from your in-market date: start from the day product has to be on a shelf or in a fulfillment center, and subtract each stage until you reach the day you have to place the order.
