The four label decoration methods

Almost every container is decorated one of four ways. Pressure-sensitive labels are printed film or paper on an adhesive liner — flexible, low-tooling, and the easiest to start. Shrink sleeves are printed tubes that shrink to the container, giving 360° graphics, complex-shape coverage, and tamper bands. Direct print (screen, pad, or digital onto the container) is seamless and durable but higher-tooling. In-mold labels are placed in the mold so the label becomes part of the molded part — premium and durable, but only if you mold the part yourself.

How to read the recommendation

  • The winner is a starting point. If the runner-up is close, the deciding factor is usually your priority — tooling cost versus premium look versus recyclability.

What is an in-mold label?

An in-mold label is placed inside the mold before the plastic is injected or blown, so the label fuses to the part and becomes its surface. It gives a durable, premium, seamless result, but it only makes sense if you mold the container yourself, because it happens during molding rather than after.

How do you decorate a stand-up pouch?

A pouch is decorated by printing the film it is made from, using flexo, rotogravure, or digital, not by applying a separate label to a finished container.
