The trade-offs to design around
Direct decoration is not free of constraints, and the honest ones are worth designing around from the start:
- One color per pass. Each color needs its own screen or plate and its own pass, with the container re-registered between them. Two or three clean spot colors are routine; a photographic, full-color image is usually the wrong job for screen or pad. That single fact is the biggest difference from a printed label.
- Registration limits. Every pass reintroduces the chance of slight misalignment, so tightly interlocking multi-color art is harder on a bottle than on a flat sheet. Designs that keep colors from having to kiss perfectly are far more forgiving.
- Setup effort. Screens and plates have to be made for each color, and the line has to be tooled to hold and index your specific container.
