Packaging printing methods: how packaging is actually printed
There is no single "best" way to print a package. Flexo, digital, gravure, offset, screen, pad, and foil each exist because they win in different situations. This guide explains how each method works, what it's good and bad at, and — the part most guides skip — which one actually fits your format, run length, and budget.

Packaging is printed by one of a handful of method families — flexography, digital, rotogravure, offset lithography, screen and pad printing, and decoration processes like foil stamping and embossing — and the right one is chosen by your format, substrate, run length, number of versions, and color needs, not by which press is "best." Each method exists because it wins a specific trade-off. In plain terms:
- Flexography — the high-speed workhorse for labels and flexible packaging
- Digital — no plates, so it wins short runs, many versions, and variable data
- Rotogravure — engraved cylinders for very long, high-volume flexible runs
- Offset lithography — crisp, photographic print for folding cartons and litho-laminated corrugated
- Screen & pad — decoration applied straight onto bottles, jars, tubes, and closures
- Foil & emboss — finishing effects layered on top of print for shelf appeal
What a "printing method" actually means
A printing method is simply how the ink (or foil) gets from your artwork onto the material. Every method has to solve the same problem — carry a design, meter the right amount of ink, and press it onto a substrate that might be paper, film, foil, glass, or plastic — and each solves it differently. Those differences are why one method is cheap at a million units and ruinous at a thousand, and why another prints beautifully on a folding carton but can't touch a curved bottle.
Most methods work through an image carrier — a plate, a cylinder, or a stencil — that holds the design and transfers ink to the substrate, one carrier per color. Digital printing is the outlier: it has no carrier at all, jetting or fusing ink straight from a file. It's worth separating two jobs a method can do. Primary decoration lays down the main graphics — the brand, the imagery, the copy. Embellishment (foil, embossing, spot varnish) adds a finishing effect on top. A single premium package often uses several methods at once: an offset-printed carton, a foil-stamped logo, and an embossed panel are three separate processes on one blank.
The six packaging print families

Flexography (flexo)
Flexo prints from a flexible rubber or photopolymer relief plate; a precisely engraved anilox roller meters a controlled film of ink onto the raised image, which then presses onto a moving web of material. It runs fast, handles almost any substrate — films, papers, foils, board — and lays down strong spot colors and opaque white. That makes it the default for pressure-sensitive labels and flexible packaging, and a strong choice once a run is long and stable enough to earn back the plates. Digital (inkjet and toner)
Digital printing skips plates entirely, imaging each impression straight from the file with inkjet or dry/liquid toner. No plates means no per-color tooling and almost no make-ready, so it's the natural home for short runs, frequent version changes, quick turns, and variable data like serial numbers and unique codes. Rotogravure (gravure)
Gravure prints from an engraved metal cylinder whose surface is covered in tiny recessed cells; a doctor blade wipes the surface clean and the ink held in the cells transfers to the web. The result is exceptional consistency and rich solids, run after run, at very high speed — the reason gravure dominates the longest, highest-volume flexible-packaging jobs. Offset lithography (offset / litho)
Offset works on a chemical principle — ink and water don't mix. A flat plate is treated so image areas hold ink and non-image areas hold water; the inked image transfers to a rubber blanket, which offsets it onto the sheet. It delivers crisp, photographic-quality print on paperboard, which is why it's the standard for folding cartons and for litho-laminated corrugated retail packaging. Screen and pad printing (direct-to-container)
When decoration goes straight onto the object — a bottle, jar, tube, or closure — screen and pad printing take over. Screen pushes ink through a fine mesh stencil and suits flat and cylindrical surfaces; pad picks ink out of an etched plate with a soft silicone pad and presses it onto irregular and curved shapes. Both lay down bold, durable, tactile ink on glass, plastic, and metal with no label at all. The trade-offs are a limited number of colors per pass, tighter registration, and setup per color. Foil stamping and embellishment
This family isn't primary printing — it's the finishing layer that makes packaging feel premium. Foil stamping uses a heated (or inline cold) die to apply metallic or holographic foil; embossing and debossing use a die pair to raise or recess the substrate; spot UV and tactile varnishes add gloss and texture. These effects are almost always layered on top of flexo, offset, or digital print, each as its own pass with its own tooling. Which method suits which format
The fastest way to narrow the field is to start from your format — the physical thing being decorated — because that alone rules several methods in or out. This reference table maps the six families against the common packaging formats. "Workhorse" means it's the usual default; "Sometimes" means it's used for specific niches; "Rarely" means it's technically possible but unusual; "No" means it isn't the right tool.

Read down a column and the field narrows immediately. A folding carton is an offset-or-digital question with flexo in the mix; a stand-up pouch is flexo-or-gravure with digital for short runs; a glass bottle you want printed rather than labeled is a screen-or-pad question. The look you're after usually layers a decoration method — foil or emboss — on top of whichever primary process you land on. What actually drives the choice: run, versions, and inks
Once the format has trimmed the list, four variables usually settle it. None of them are about which method is objectively "better" — they're about which trade-off fits your job. We'll keep this qualitative on purpose: exact break-even points move with tooling, materials, and your supplier, so treat these as directions, not numbers.
- Run length. Plate- and cylinder-based methods (flexo, gravure, offset) carry upfront tooling that gets cheaper per unit the longer the run. Digital carries no tooling but costs more per impression, so it wins at low volume and loses at high volume. - Version count. One design across a long run favors plates. Many versions, frequent artwork changes, or truly unique pieces (serialized codes, personalization) favor digital, because every plate change is a cost a digital press simply doesn't have.
- Color and special inks. Brand-critical spot colors, opaque white under a design on clear film, and metallics all print more reliably on some methods than others. Process-color photography leans offset and gravure; bulletproof spot-color matching and heavy white lean flexo. - Substrate. Films and foils want flexo, gravure, or digital; paperboard wants offset or flexo; a rigid container wants screen or pad. The material you've already chosen quietly decides a lot of this for you.
In practice these interact: a short-run pouch with six SKUs and a Pantone brand color is a different answer than a million-unit pouch of the same product. That's why "which method?" is really "which method for this job?" — and why a printed sample and a real quote beat any rule of thumb.
