Two labels can look identical and behave completely differently — because the part that decides whether it stays on is the layer you never see. This guide walks through the main label adhesive families, when to reach for each, and how to match one to your product's surface and the conditions it faces.

Choose a label adhesive by two things: the surface energy of what you're labeling and the environment the label has to survive. Get that one pairing right and you prevent most label failures — lifting corners, bubbling, and labels that simply won't grip plastic. The label's size, shape, and artwork don't change the adhesive decision; the substrate and the conditions do.

  • Permanent — the default: bonds hard and is meant to stay
  • Removable — peels away cleanly within a time window
  • Repositionable — low initial grab so you can reposition, then it sets
  • High-tack / aggressive — for stubborn plastics, textured, or recycled surfaces

What a label adhesive actually does

A pressure-sensitive label is a three-layer sandwich: a printable face stock on top, a release liner on the bottom, and the adhesive in the middle. That adhesive is a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) — it bonds under light finger or roller pressure alone, with no water, heat, or solvent needed to activate it. Every adhesive balances three properties. Tack is the initial grab — how firmly it holds the instant it touches the surface. Adhesion is the ultimate bond it reaches after it has had time to flow and settle. Cohesion is the adhesive's internal strength — its resistance to oozing at the edges or splitting when peeled. The adhesive families at a glance

Adhesives are sorted into broad families by what they're built to do. These are families, not brand grades — each converter carries several certified adhesives within each family, and the exact one depends on your surface and environment. Here's how the common families line up.

Underneath these families sit a few base chemistries — acrylic, rubber-based (hot-melt), and silicone — each with a personality. Rubber-based adhesives offer high initial tack; acrylics tend to run clearer, hold up better to UV and temperature, and build their bond over time; silicone handles extreme temperature swings. Surface energy: why some plastics fight the label

The single most useful concept in label adhesion is surface energy — how readily a surface lets the adhesive wet out and spread into contact with it. On a high-surface-energy surface — glass, metal, PET, coated paper — the adhesive flows out and grips easily, so nearly any adhesive works. On a low-surface-energy (LSE) surface, the adhesive beads up instead of spreading, contact stays partial, and the label lifts.

The usual culprits are polyolefins: polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) and polypropylene (PP), the plastics used for so many bottles, tubs, and pails. Silicone and some powder coats behave the same way. As a rough rule of thumb, LSE surfaces generally sit below roughly 34 dynes per centimeter — treat that as an approximate guideline, not a hard line, and verify with your supplier for a specific resin. For these surfaces you need a high-tack or LSE-specific adhesive formulated to wet out on stubborn plastics.

Surface energy isn't the only surface problem. Texture keeps the adhesive from reaching into the valleys of a rough or embossed surface; tight curvature on small-diameter bottles pulls at the label edges and causes flagging; recycled kraft and corrugate are dusty and absorbent; and contamination — dust, oils, mold-release agents, or condensation — will defeat even the right adhesive. Matching the adhesive to the environment

Once you know the surface, the second question is what the label has to survive. The environment often matters as much as the plastic underneath.

  • Cold and frozen. A standard PSA stiffens and loses tack near and below freezing, and it struggles to grab a cold or damp container. A freezer or all-temperature adhesive stays pliable and is built to apply onto already-cold or moist surfaces.

  • Oily or greasy. In kitchens, automotive, and some cosmetics, oils migrate under the label and undermine the bond over time; use an adhesive rated for oily surfaces.
  • Outdoor, UV, and heat. Sun, weather, and temperature swings call for a UV-stable acrylic adhesive and a durable film face stock, so neither the bond nor the print breaks down.
  • Chemical and scuff exposure. On drums, cleaners, and industrial goods, the face stock and laminate protect the print while the adhesive holds — spec them together, not in isolation.

Two application details ride alongside all of this. Most adhesives have a minimum application temperature — apply below it and even a good adhesive won't bond. And every PSA needs dwell time to reach full strength, so a label that grips instantly isn't necessarily at its final bond yet.

How permanent, removable, and repositionable really differ

Time is the hidden variable that separates these families. A pressure-sensitive adhesive keeps building its bond over dwell time — ultimate adhesion is reached hours to days after application, not the instant it lands. That timeline is what "permanent" and "removable" actually describe.

  • Permanent isn't instant concrete; it keeps building. Try to lift a permanent label a day later and it fights back, often tearing the face stock or leaving residue behind.
  • Removable holds a window: clean removal is designed within a period. Leave a removable label on long enough, or expose it to heat, and it can bond harder and stop peeling cleanly.
  • Repositionable has a deliberately low first grab so you can lift and reposition it during application, after which it sets toward its working bond.
  • Wash-off is a separate promise altogether — clean release under a specific caustic or hot-water process, which is what makes returnable and refillable bottle programs work.

So "permanent versus removable" isn't really a scale of strength. It's a promise about later removal. Decide up front whether the label ever has to come off cleanly, because retrofitting that decision after the fact is exactly where residue and torn faces come from.

When labels fail — and whether the adhesive is to blame

The adhesive gets blamed for plenty of failures it didn't cause. Before you re-spec it, sort the symptom into an adhesive problem or an application problem.

  • Edge lifting or flagging on curved and small-diameter containers — often the face stock is too stiff for the diameter, or the adhesive is under-tacked for the surface. See why labels bubble and peel.
  • Bubbling or tunneling — usually trapped air or a face-and-adhesive mismatch, and frequently an application issue rather than the glue itself.

  • Residue or ghosting after removal — typically a permanent adhesive asked to behave like a removable one.

Then there are the failures no adhesive can fix: a dirty, dusty, oily, or wet surface at application; too little dwell before the product is handled or stacked; and applying below the adhesive's minimum temperature. Rule out the surface and the process first — often the adhesive was right and the application wasn't.
